In Daring Greatly, Brené Brown helped me know that when I feel, I am vulnerable. I know that it is easier to stay quiet; I felt raw and naked. Uncertainty, risks and emotional exposure felt uncomfortable but necessary. I needed courage to let my truth, deep feelings and memories be seen. These words are the essence of: Between Sleep and Awake.
From the book:
"He was not who I dreamed he was and I was unconscious in my fantasy. Past lives ignited the fire of our connection. Without our past history and my family, my inner child would not have created this fantasy. But these past lives and my childhood were real. I needed to be asleep in fantasy, in order to fall in-between sleep and awake – and awaken to reality."

New book of poetry exposes truths readers yearn to hear
‘Between Sleep and Awake’ contrasts the experience of dreams and wakeful experiences.
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In her new poetry collection “Between Sleep and Awake” (published by Balboa Press), author Wendy Kochenthal explores the growth she experienced in learning to embrace the creativity of her fantasy memories and reality. “Between Sleep and Awake” is a journal in poetry that moves from escape into fantasy, through terror in nighttime unconscious revelations and out of confusion into understanding, clarity and becoming grounded in relationships with self, with others and with her creativity. Kochenthal’s book of poetry delves deeply and realistically into issues that can emanate fear and shame. Her courage and honesty attempt to help readers become aware and be brave as their true selves are revealed. “Between Sleep and Awake” By Wendy Kochenthal Softcover | 6 x 9 in | 88 pages | ISBN 9781452546964 E-Book | 88 pages | ISBN 9781452546957 Available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble
Compelling and Brave.
The poems of Kochenthal develop cumulative power in their revelation of a fragmented self. The palpable effort of integration, in the face of childhood abuse, by an "incestuous King," a "needy Queen," who "devours me," is rendered in these transparent, self-disclosing poems. Lines like "I am a butterfly with a child's head," or a reference to the mother who dies "in her apartment of rot," are juxtaposed with the candid, "Have you ever seen a cat fly?" The poems are most successful when they incorporate a series of concrete images, for example, in "The Bubble of Patience," the poet links a series: "bubblegum," "balloon," to the title's image. Between Sleep and Awake is a compelling and brave exploration.
“This collection is inspiring, provocative, and a true joy to read – it is a ‘do not miss’ for all of us who love to dance in the spaces between.”

“I'm absolutely in love with your book, Between Sleep and Awake. I feel like I'm not the only one on this planet who feels these things and goes through these experiences.”

"Wendy Kochenthal's first book of poetry, "In Love with Words and Clay," rings with an understated authenticity connected to both hand and heart. Through her off the beaten path voice, she invokes both the potter and poet, calling out to all to traverse the inner landscape in celebration, mourning, and mindful meditation. These slender poetic creations leave you with a feeling that you have just sipped from "an honest cup of tea."
